Travel often takes you places where internet access is unreliable — remote hiking trails, international destinations without a local SIM card, subway tunnels, or simply areas with poor cell coverage. Placify is designed to work alongside your device’s offline maps so you can still access your saved places and navigate to them.

How offline access works in Placify

Placify itself doesn’t directly download offline map data. Instead, it integrates with Apple Maps, which provides robust offline map support on iOS. Here’s how to set up a seamless offline experience:

Step 1: Download offline maps in Apple Maps

Before your trip, while you still have a good internet connection:

  1. Open the Apple Maps app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initials in the bottom-right corner.
  3. Select “Offline Maps.”
  4. Tap “Download New Map.”
  5. Search for the area you’ll be visiting (city, region, or a custom area you define by panning and zooming).
  6. Tap “Download.” The map data, including points of interest, will be saved to your device.

Step 2: Use Placify with downloaded maps

Once you have offline maps installed, Placify works seamlessly:

  • Your saved places and routes are stored locally on your device, so you can browse your entire collection without an internet connection.
  • When you tap a place’s address to get directions, Apple Maps will use the downloaded offline map data to calculate routes and provide navigation — no data connection needed.
  • Photos, notes, and tags attached to your places are all available offline.

What works offline

  • Viewing your saved places, views, and routes
  • Browsing place details, photos, and notes
  • Getting driving and walking directions via Apple Maps offline maps
  • Adding new custom places by dropping a pin (though search won’t work without internet)

What requires an internet connection

  • Searching for new places not already in your collection
  • Importing places from links or other apps
  • Downloading updated map data
  • Sharing places or routes with others
  • Syncing changes across multiple devices (if you use Placify on multiple iOS devices)

Tips for traveling with Placify

  • Prepare ahead. Download offline maps for all areas you plan to visit before leaving home or your hotel Wi-Fi.
  • Save places in advance. Do your research and save all the places you might want to visit before you go offline. That way, you’ll have a full itinerary ready even without service.
  • Use custom places. If you discover a new spot while offline, you can still add it by long-pressing on the map — even though search won’t work, manual pin drops will.
  • Keep maps updated. Apple Maps offline data expires periodically. Make sure your downloads are fresh before a big trip.
